Renting a car can open up a completely different side of Galicia. Beyond Santiago and the larger cities lie coastal villages, mountain roads, hidden waterfalls and river viewpoints that are difficult to combine by public transport.

But not every visitor needs a car for the entire trip. This practical guide explains when renting makes sense, where to collect a vehicle and what to check before booking.

Do you need a rental car in Galicia?

For a city break in Santiago de Compostela, you may be better off walking and using public transport. If your plans include Ribeira Sacra, smaller villages, quiet beaches or several natural attractions, a car gives you much more flexibility.

Where to pick up a car

Look at collection options at Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña and Vigo airports, as well as city locations. Porto Airport in Portugal can also be relevant for some itineraries, but check whether cross-border travel into Spain is permitted and whether extra fees apply.

How to compare rental offers

Do not compare prices using the headline daily rate alone. Read the conditions for the security deposit, insurance excess, fuel policy, mileage limits, driver age, additional drivers and cancellation. Confirm whether a credit card in the main driver’s name is required.

Which type of car is best?

A compact car is often easier to manage on narrow rural roads and in village parking spaces. For families or longer trips, luggage capacity matters too. If you prefer an automatic, reserve it specifically rather than assuming one will be available at collection.

Insurance and the deposit

Understand the difference between insurance included with the rental and optional additional cover. Check the excess, exclusions and whether the rental company will block a deposit on your card. Third-party reimbursement products may operate differently from cover supplied by the rental company.

Driving and parking in Galicia

Major roads connect the cities, but rural routes can be narrow and winding. Allow extra time in fog or heavy rain, and do not follow navigation instructions onto unsuitable tracks. Historic centres may restrict vehicle access, so ask your accommodation about parking before arrival.

Plan the right route

For a first road trip, our 7-day Galicia itinerary with map connects Santiago, the Rías Baixas and Ribeira Sacra. For a shorter inland journey, try the scenic Ribeira Sacra route.

Before collecting the car: Check the rental agreement, inspect the vehicle, photograph any existing damage and confirm the return location and time. Keep a copy of your booking conditions.

Booking information: Prices, availability and terms vary by provider and date. Always confirm the final terms directly before paying.
