In the wooded countryside of Toques, in A Coruña province, the Furelos River drops over a rocky ledge beside an old stone mill. This is Fervenza de Brañas, a rewarding stop for travellers who enjoy discovering Galicia beyond its better-known coastal sights.
The mill is what makes the setting memorable. When the river is running high after rain, the water can spill across the structure, creating a striking combination of landscape and traditional rural architecture. Water levels vary considerably with the season.
Walking to the waterfall
A useful starting point is the Área recreativa do río Furelos at Paradela, in the municipality of Toques. Do not confuse it with the similarly named recreational area near Melide. The signposted PR-G 166 walking route passes through woodland and rural tracks toward the waterfall. Depending on the loop selected, walkers can cover approximately 6.5 km or extend the outing to around 12 km.
Expect forest paths, gravel tracks and some paved sections. The route is generally manageable for regular walkers, but older signs may be faded. Carry an offline map or GPS track, especially if following the longer circuit.
Before you go
Parking at the Paradela picnic area is limited. Wear shoes with good grip, bring drinking water and avoid approaching slippery rocks near the cascade. After rainfall the waterfall is particularly impressive, although trails may be muddy.
