Above the Sil River, the land rises into wooded ridges and dramatic cliffs. The viewpoints of Ribeira Sacra offer some of Galicia’s most striking scenery, but each has a different character — and the journey between them deserves time.

This guide focuses on a manageable selection around the Sil Canyon. Some viewpoints involve short walks, narrow approach roads or limited parking. Follow local signs and never cross safety barriers for a photograph.

Map of the Sil Canyon viewpoints

Explore the area on the map and open the linked route to see the selected viewpoints as navigable stops. It is a planning aid, not a promise that every road or viewpoint is accessible at all times.

Balcones de Madrid

Near Parada de Sil, Balcones de Madrid is one of the best-known places to look out over the canyon. The river lies far below, framed by steep wooded slopes. Allow time to enjoy the view rather than treating it as a quick roadside stop.

Miradoiro de Cabezoás

This viewpoint is a popular choice for a broad panorama of the Sil Canyon. It works well as part of a drive through the Parada de Sil area, although parking and road conditions should be checked on arrival.

Miradoiro de Vilouxe

Vilouxe rewards travellers who enjoy reaching a quieter lookout on foot. Check the current approach and walking conditions locally, wear suitable shoes and avoid assuming that the shortest route shown by a navigation app is the best one.

How to plan a viewpoint day

Choose two or three stops rather than trying to see them all. Morning mist can create an atmospheric landscape, while changing cloud and sunlight transform the canyon throughout the day. If visibility is poor, enjoy a village or monastery stop and return when conditions improve.

Before you go: Bring water, sturdy footwear and a light rain jacket. Respect private land, park only where permitted and check local access information.

Continue exploring: Pair the viewpoints with a monastery or river excursion, but leave enough time for winding roads.
