Hidden Galicia Road Trips: Waterfalls, Castles & Ribeira Sacra

Three scenic self-drive routes through Hidden Galicia: Ribeira Sacra viewpoints, woodland waterfalls and rural Lugo castles, with practical planning tips.

Beyond Galicia’s famous cities and beaches are woodland waterfalls, riverside villages, historic castles and viewpoints above the Miño. These three flexible driving itineraries connect some of our favourite lesser-known places. Choose a route, explore the detailed guides and leave time for unplanned stops.

Good to know: Driving times vary with mountain roads and stops. The routes below are suggested regional groupings rather than turn-by-turn navigation; check road access, trail conditions and opening times before travelling.

Route 1: Ribeira Sacra’s Hidden Miño Valley

Start with the dramatic views at Miradoiro da Cariza, then explore the riverside landscape around Praia da Cova. On a separate half-day, if you are comfortable with steep walking paths, visit Fervenza de Augacaída. These places are spread across the region: use a map to choose a sensible driving order based on where you stay rather than attempting every stop in a rush.

Route 2: Galicia’s Lesser-Known Waterfalls

Near Toques, Fervenza de Brañas offers a woodland walk beside the Furelos River. In the wider Palas de Rei area, discover Fervenza do Mácara. Both reward visitors who enjoy nature and have suitable footwear. These are separate walks, not a continuous marked route, so plan time for each and check trail access after heavy rain.

Route 3: Castles and Ancient Galicia in Rural Lugo

Begin with Castillo de Pambre, a medieval fortress in the countryside near Palas de Rei. Continue towards the Portomarín area to explore the ancient hillfort of Castromaior. The contrast between a fortified medieval residence and an Iron Age settlement makes this an especially interesting day for history lovers.

Check the castle’s visiting arrangements before leaving and allow time for short walks and photographs.

Plan Your Hidden Galicia Trip

Where to stay: A base in Ribeira Sacra suits the Miño valley route; Melide, Palas de Rei or the wider Lugo area may work better for the northern routes. Browse our accommodation guide and Stay22 maps to compare locations.

Getting around: Many of these locations are easiest to combine by car. Read our car rental guide before booking, especially for rural driving and insurance conditions.
